HERE I'M GOING TO BE TELLING YOU GUYS ABOUT THE BEST SITE I'VE COME ACROSS SO FAR. HOPEFULLY AS TIME GOES BY, I WILL COME ACROSS BETTER AND BETTER SITES - BUT I REALLY WONDER IF EVER MY SITE WILL MATCH UP TO THE SHEER AMAZEMENT THESE SITES MAKE US EXPERIENCE.
ANYWAY TILL THEN HERE'S THE BEST SITE IN THE UNIVERSE -
I
GOT THE LINK TO THIS SITE FROM AMONG THE LINKS AT xdude.com. THE SITE'S CALLED
'EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED' WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT ITS ABOUT. I'M ACTUALLY IN
TWO MINDS WHETHER THIS ONE OR xdude.com IS THE BEST. AS OF NOW, I'M STILL
AN xdude FAN SO THIS COMES SECOND. BUT SERIOUSLY, THIS IS ONE SITE THATS GONNA
BLOW YOUR MIND.
OH YEAH... ONE PIECE OF TRIVIA... THIS SITE'S DESIGNED BY THIS GERMAN TEENAGER BY THE NAME OF MARCUS WHO'S ONLY 19 YEARS OLD -
This has to be among
the all-time favourites... its cool, its hip and its Indian too. Go hit on
Rediff On The Net
If you are a die-hard
cricket fan... you probably know where to go. If you don't, then you aren't
a die-hard cricket fan! Anyway, just go to Cricinfo
If you want to know
how smart you really are, visit this site and give the MENSA WORKOUT. Half
an hour - 30 questions - and only your brains for company. See how much you
score on the test and let me know. Btw, just for the record - I scored 26/30
but one of my best friends scored 29. can you beat THAT? let me know if you
manage either record :-) For those who've heard of Mensa...
While we're at it, how about giving your brain some more food for thought. Ever thought of getting certificates for how smart you are? If you're sure of yourself and you want proof to show off to everyone, this is one godsend for you. The site is Brainbench and at this site you can give online tests on almost anything under the sun and get your results immediately. The best part is once you give the test, they mail you a hard copy of a certificate wherever you are. Its a U.S. of A. based site, and for International deliveries it takes them about 8-12 weeks to deliver the certificate at your doorstep. And everything's free! But I think I overheard someone say they might start charging for their services. So better buck up and register yourself and start working with those grey cells up there... One piece of advice though! When you register, use your real name and real address. You don't want to get a certificate with a fictitious name right? And you want the certificate to reach your place right?
The best thing thats
ever happened to computer users in India, and by that, I literally mean the
BEST! A really smart outfit, with brainy people everywhere, I've gone to their
office twice and come away impressed both times. Met with Gourav, Kaustubh,
Amit and a few more too. One more thing, if ever you find yourself in a spot
of bother with your computer, just pick up your phone and give 'em a call.
Ask for Dr. Chip or Marco or Veer... they'll help you as much as possible.
They just shifted to a new office at Navi Mumbai which makes it closer to
a lot of us. Btw, the phone numbers I'm talking about are (91)-(022)-7629191 and (91)-(022)-7629200
and the name of the company is CHIP......
Are you someone who
has important data on the computer? Are you worried about backing it up? Do
you feel your floppy drives are too small to store all your data? If yes,
then you will find this pretty useful. Here's a site, where you just have
to register, and you get minimum 20 MBs of free disk space online. And if
you spread the word about the site, you keep getting more online space. You
can create your own personalised folders, and transferring data onto the site
is a lark. Its really easy and efficient and you can transfer upto 7 files
together. Btw, the name of the site I'm talking about is Driveway.
JobsAhead is one of the very recent Indian sites and it has a pretty cool interface.
The content on the site is innovative and promising although you have a lot
better chance of landing a job if you've got experience, and you're a graduate.
Turns out most of the companies still want that. Which leaves inexperienced
under-graduates like me still on the lookout for something really cool, and
something I can do while sitting at home. But on the other hand, I can always
try out their spread-the-word-and-cross-your-fingers scheme which might leave
me a lot richer. Anyway you check this out, maybe you can earn enough pocket
money by opening your mouth and helping someone get a job.
This caught my eye in
the newspaper the other day because they promised to give free Internet accounts
to people. I went to the Caltiger site, and realised
this was a Calcutta-based company, which explains the name. Turns out they
started services in Calcutta and Jamshedpur, but Mumbaikars had to wait for
more than 10 days after that because of some technical problems. The way this
start-up company's going, I'm not too sure if we'd even want to use their
services, regardless if they're free or not.
Most of us have sent
online greetings to friends and family. Think about it, and the sites that
come to mind are the ones which everyone seems to use. Then think how it would
be to send cards which could be animated as well. YNOT
is a site which promises us much more than what we've come to expect from
online greeting card sites. You get two options in sending cards: you can
send an animated card or you could just send a postcard without animation.
The best thing about the postcard is that its quick while on the same hand
not compromising on content. Enough of me telling you about this site, go
check it out yourself.
Digital Blasphemy is one of the most amazing sites I have ever seen. Its got beautiful 3-D wallpapers
in five different sizes. The wallpapers are breathtaking and vibrantly colourful,
with about 50-odd wallpapers freely available for download. You could pay
up and become a member but trust me, the free wallpapers are pretty darn amazing
themselves.
The best thing about this site is that if you've finished downloading all
the free wallpapers, like I have, and you're still thirsty for more, like
I am :-), you can check out the users gallery where you'll find creations
by people all around the world, all freely available. This site is something
that will make you think, and wonder, and admire the ingenuity of the people
who've created such beautiful images.
If you're reading this,
chances are, you probably have an e-mail account at Hotmail. Seems almost
everyone today does. And what's more, when you think of e-mail, the name Hotmail
seems to just associate with it almost automatically. But if you've heard
about the recent and the not-so-recent attacks on Hotmail servers by hackers,
you might have wondered how safe your e-mail actually is. So if you use your
e-mail for transferring really important and private documents, maybe its
time for you to check out some of the more safer e-mail providers around.
One such provider is Hushmail. I'm not really
a spokesperson for them, but from what I know about it, I think they use 64-bit
encryption and it works at its safest if you're sending e-mails to a Hushmail
e-mail address.
MyOwnEmail is this amazing site where you can get really cool e-mail addresses for yourself,
but only if they're not already taken. The best part about the site is that
you can choose your own domain name. Like @trust-me.com
or something like @imneverwrong.com
or maybe even something like @cuteandcuddly.com.
Don't ask me more coz I think you should check it out for yourself. They've
got over 200 such domain names, and you're bound to like something they've
got.
Arcin is another Indian start-up and they're supposed to pay people in Indian rupees
for surfing online. The only catch is, we need to use their browser for surfing.
They'll be getting their revenue from advertisements displayed on the browser,
and according to them, paying us for using their service. We have to download
the browser which is about 7 MBs. But oh yeah, there's a small hitch. These
people still havent activated my account which I registered over three months
ago in January 2000. The reason - they were overflooded with the response
they got and they weren't well-equipped to deal with it. Just hope these people
get up and started before someone comes and steals their sunshine.
One last thing... for what its worth... they'd said they'd be paying 6 rupees
for every hour we surfed using their browser and you could only surf for a
specific maximum number of hours per month. And if you brought in more people
to use the service, you'd get paid at a lower rate for how much those people
surfed as well. And when our total came up to 500 rupees, they'd mail us a cheque for the amount.
One of the most popular
youth channels today is MTV. I'm someone who swears by Cyrus and his antics.
And like everyone else, I thank God there's only ONE Cyrus. Although come
to think of it, wouldn't everyone want to see how TWO Cyruses would live with
each other. But I bet two Malaikas would be more fun. Or maybe another million.
Let's face it, MTV's got the coolest VJs there ever were. Cyrus, Malaika,
Nikhil, Shehnaz, Amrita, Maria... the whole gang is amazing. The MTV website
here is MTVIndia which promises to be another
MTV in the making... just as bad (or good) as the one beaming into our houses
24 hours a day. Anyway, if you can't get enough of the MTV gang, go check
out the website. But I'd suggest you check out the real thing. As if you didn't
already know that.
If my website gives you hope and inspiration and you
want to put up your own website, then you can visit a lot of places which
offer you free website addresses and free online space. Tripod
was my personal favourite but their Customer Support SUCKS BIG TIME! Which
is why I'm on the lookout for a better web-hosting service. Anyway Tripod
does provide you with 50 megs of free web space... but I've lost SO MANY of
my usernames to Tripod and its inefficiency in getting things sorted out that
its just no use having so many megs of space. And now that I've been trying
to search for other alternative web-hosting services, I've realised that even
though Tripod might give you a lot of stuff, its no good if any time you log
out incorrectly, you cannot log in to your account... EVER AGAIN! I know its
one of the few ones that provide you with a URL that looks like http://yoursitename.tripod.com
rather than the other web-hosting services like Geocities or Xoom which would
give you a URL like www.geocities.com/yoursitename
or www.xoom.com/yoursitename.
But take a look around and you'll find that most of the other web-hosting
services are giving you URLS like the ones Tripod gives you... Sites like
www.freeservers.com
or www.webjump.com
or www.homepage.com.
Apart from all that, Tripod and Geocities provide you with as long a URL as
you want, but at Xoom you have to take a website name not longer than 12 characters.
Moreover, at Tripod you can upload files and create folders through your web
browser which makes it all the more simple and you don't have to learn how
to use an FTP client. Finally, everything said and done, if I wanted free
web-server space, I'd never get my website hosted under Tripod, although when
it comes to services offered, its probably the best... but NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT!
One of the best things about the Internet is that if
you want the best of everything, you just might be able to get it. I just
told you about a web-hosting service which is probably the best around. Have
you heard about domain forwarding? Its about you getting yourself a URL name
which you prefer and then you can just forward every user from that URL to
where your website is actually located. For example, I've got myself this
forwarding URL which is http://cyberaholic.someone.net
which forwards every user to this website. Check this out right now if you
wish. Open up another browser window and in that type out http://cyberaholic.someone.net
and you can see it brings you to this very site.
You also get different options for your domain names one of which is someone.net.
The best part about this website is that everything is free and I have a feeling
this site is Indian which is pretty cool.
And the best part about all this is, if you check out my website this way,
I get two hits to my website as well. LOL :-)
Okay, I admit I took quite some time to visit this
site after I first saw it being publicised on the road, but this site does
hold your interest when you visit it. Although not for very long because you
soon realise that the creators of JamMag weren't
patient enough to wait till they completed everything. That is why half the
links on this site don't work. Atleast they didn't when I went there. Especially
the most interesting parts of the website, which is the part where they say
you can find a mate for yourself online. LOL :-) Umm... anyway I've got one
reason to be really pissed at this site. Actually I shouldn't be getting pissed
at the site, but the person who stole my e-mail address.
I'll explain. You see, whenever I go to any website, I register using the
best e-mail address I've ever had, which is MrNiceGuy@thePentagon.com.
But this was the only site where they accepted my user name, but they said
my e-mail address was already taken by someone. I
mean, shouldn't there be a way to give me back something that is rightfully
mine? Its my e-mail address being used by some schmuck out there, and I think
I should be the one using MY e-mail address. Don't you agree?
Hey whoever's-taken-my-e-mail-addy, I know my e-mail address is really cool,
and you'd really want something as cool but isn't this just pure plagiarism?
Now that I've said it out aloud, one of two things is going to happen. I'm
either going to get back my e-mail address from a good samaritan or JamMag.com
or a handful of you are going to have fun at my expense and use up my e-mail
address at every site you know.
Just over a year ago, this was a channel which was
down in the dumps with most of the youth in India. But today Channel [V] has
a very revived and refreshing look and its giving MTV a run for its money.
The best part about the channel today is that they're giving more importance
to content and English music rather than just senseless playing of Bollywood
songs and movie publicity. And they've really been working on the website
and it shows. On a rather different note, their website is named VIndia.com
and not channelv.com as we'd expect. You're bound to find something interesting
on the website and chances are, you'll be hooked on for about a couple of
hours exploring the site. So go visit their website but only when you have
enough time to enjoy the site.
If you want to register your own domain name for free,
then this is probably the site for you. NameZero is a site where they say
you can get your own name-based domain name for free, and they ask you to
verify your e-mail address before signing up. They also say they'll contact
you by e-mail before giving you your domain name, although I haven't heard
even a whisper from them in a long time now. Btw, I do have my doubts about
the promises this site is making, and this could all be an e-mail ID gathering
trick. But I know this friend who got a domain from them after he sent the
WebMaster a personal e-mail. So I guess the only way to find out is to wait
and watch...... and hope for the best!
If you want to know more about aliens and other supernatural
unexplained stuff, check out this cool site. The guy who made this is a whizfriend.
